In 2021, Virginia Riccardi became Head of School at The Knox School, beginning a new chapter in Knox’s long and meaningful history. A graduate of Columbia University’s Teacher’s College, Mrs. Riccardi started at Knox in 2011, and served in nearly every department in the School, including Development, Admissions, Summer Programs and Academics before being named Head of School. Her headship began at a pivotal time, as schools across the country were emerging from the uncertainty and disruption of the pandemic. For Knox, this moment became an opportunity to return with renewed clarity to what has always made the School distinctive: a close-knit community, a deeply personal approach to education, and an unwavering belief in the potential of every student.
As both a longtime Knox educator and administrator with more than 35 years in the field, Mrs. Riccardi brought to the role a deep understanding of The Knox School culture, traditions, and students. Her philosophy is rooted in the belief that the deepest levels of learning occur when young people feel seen, heard, and valued, and are truly known by the adults who are entrusted with their care and education. Under her leadership, Knox has continued to strengthen its identity as a student-centered boarding and day school where compassion is not simply an ideal, but a daily practice. This approach reflects the School’s philosophy that academic excellence grows best in an environment of trust, connection, and belonging.
Mrs. Riccardi’s vision has helped clarify and elevate Knox’s mission: to deliver a student-centered education guided by compassion that cultivates academic excellence, leadership, and self-confidence in every learner. Through personalized learning pathways, comprehensive programs in the arts and athletics, and a values-based culture rooted in authentic relationships, Knox continues to prepare students not only for admission to strong colleges and universities, but for meaningful, purpose-driven lives.
Working together with her team and Board of Trustees, Mrs. Riccardi introduced the School’s renewed EPIC core values: Excellence, Purpose, Integrity, and Compassion. Together, these values define what it means to live, learn, and lead as part of the Knox community. “Excellence challenges students to strive for their personal best. Purpose encourages them to connect their talents and interests to a life of meaning and impact. Integrity calls them to act with honesty, responsibility, and character. Compassion reminds them to see and support others with empathy, kindness, and respect,” stated Riccardi. “What fabulous ideals to instill in today’s young people!”
Under Mrs. Riccardi’s leadership, Knox has continued to build on its academic strengths, including Advanced Placement, dual enrollment, and college-level coursework that allow students to challenge themselves and prepare for university success. The School’s personalized college counseling program, beginning early in a student’s high school journey, reflects Knox’s commitment to helping each learner discover the right path forward. Knox graduates continue to earn admission to respected colleges and universities across the United States and abroad, supported by a community that knows their strengths, goals, and aspirations.
This era has also seen continued attention to the whole student. From athletics and the arts to residential life, leadership, service, and student wellness, Knox has remained committed to developing confident, capable, and compassionate young people. Mrs. Riccardi’s leadership has reinforced the idea that students do not need to fit a single mold to succeed. Instead, they are encouraged to discover who they are, pursue what matters to them, and grow into the people they were meant to become.
As The Knox School moves forward, the Riccardi era stands as a period of renewed purpose, strengthened identity, and compassionate momentum. Guided by EPIC values and a mission centered on student growth, Knox continues to honor its history under Mrs. Riccardi’s stewardship while preparing students for the future with confidence, character, and heart.
